Drive During Peak Hours

This one may seem like a no-brainer but it’s often still news to those who are new to the rideshare game. During peak hours, your rideshare earnings can increase by more than 50%! Peak hours are typically during the morning and late afternoons, when people are commuting to or from work. One method we recommend is driving for a few hours in the morning, during morning commute time, and then a few hours when people are coming home from work, with a break in-between. The only issue with this strategy is that riders may sometimes require you to go to farther destinations than you would otherwise like, but if you’re willing to be flexible and pick up drivers along your route home, this can lead you to some major earnings.

Don’t Chase Surges

Surges are sudden increases throughout the day in the amount of riders looking for rides. Sometimes you will finish a ride and see a sudden surge around you and want to run after it. We recommend avoiding this tactic, as surges can disappear just as quickly as they appear — within a matter of minutes. Between driving to pick up your rider and taking them to their destination, you will more often than not be frustrated with the disappointing results of the so-called surge.

Travel to a Nearby City

If you live in a relatively remote area of the country, like the suburbs, your earning potential will be much less than if you were working in a city. If you live within an hour of a metropolitan area, it might be worth making you way to the city during the early hours of the day (often you will find riders who need to travel that way anyway, so you can make money along your own commute), then spend the remainder of the day giving rides in the city.

Focus on Weekends and Holidays

The more likely people are to be drinking, the more likely it is that they will need a rideshare to safely get home. Consider when people are most likely to be out partying, and schedule your driving time accordingly. The biggest nights for drinking each week are Friday and Saturday nights. Holidays such as the Fourth of July, New Year’s Eve, and the night before Thanksgiving are also big drinking events that could provide you with lucrative earnings. Yes, some vomiting in your car may happen, but there are ways to use the cleaning fee to your advantage.

Drive During Off Hours

While this might seem counterintuitive to the advice we just gave, hear us out — although peak hours, weekends, and holidays are great for finding an influx of riders, they also often mean an oversaturated amount of drivers available, making it difficult for you to nab potential jobs. Driving during off hours in addition can up your earning potential since you will be one of the only rideshare drivers available. We particularly recommend trying out the hours between 3 and 7 a.m., when many riders are looking for an early morning airport run. This will also get you to the city, where you can spend the rest of the day enjoying its higher-than-average number of rides.

Look Out for Special Events

While this tip may be less pertinent during COVID-19, there will, indeed, be a time when crowds gather again! Keep an eye on local music and event schedules for big occasions that may require designated drivers, such as festivals, big-name concerts, sports games, etc.

Experiment!

The best way to learn which hours work best for you as a rideshare driver is to give all of them a try and see which ones stick. While you may find that you have a higher earning potential during early a.m. airport runs, you may also find that the lack of sleep means you’re less likely to seize every opportunity and you drive slower than you would normally. Keep track of how you feel during different times of the day, and regularly go over your driving data to see which hours make you the most money. The great thing about being a rideshare driver is that you have total flexibility over your schedule, which means you’re never stuck to any one routine.
